Women Supporting Women: Emily Scinto
Well well well....Hey there! If you are looking at this blog post then YES, this blog looks very very different. As I have re-designed everything #transformation. I am so happy to be back with many changes to this website and so much to share with you all.
But before that, I am so excited to shift my "Woman of the Month" posts to "Women Supporting Women". Why? Because we should be supporting women on a constant. And.....maybe I forget to post every month...whatever! To kick things off for this beautiful change to my headlines, I did an interview with one of my best friends in the entire world, Emily Scinto. As you can see from her headshot....she is as the kids say "Iconic"? Aside from being one of my best pals, and my college roomie she is also TEARING.IT.UP. in the Twin Cities Theatre Community. She can give you soprano and a high kick at once. We live for it. And so with that, I give you a stunning interview from one of my favs, Emily.
Q: What have you found to be most empowering about being both a woman AND an artist in today's world?
A: I just think women are so badass...so when I see a powerful, confident woman doing something she loves, I'm completely moved, inspired and empowered. As a female artist are able to give others that feeling and thats what I find to be most empowering about what I do.
Q: What's the best advice you can give to young female artists.
A: Stop comparing yourself to others and be proud of who and what you are. it's cliché but there really is only one you. And being YOU comes with a unique set of skills, talents that somebody somewhere is going to want. It's so easy as women to compare ourselves to others, especially in this business. But when you're able to set that all aside and make that change, it's amazing the amount of growth you have, and honestly, happiness is what you experience.
Q: What has been your favorite character to play thus far in your years as an artist? What was challenging about it? How did you grow?
A: Definitely Norma Cassidy in Victor/Victoria at Artistry Theater. That character was completely unlike any other role I'd done so I found it really challenged me to go outside my comfort zone as a performer. However, after it was all done I was extremely proud of the work I had done and felt like I saw a great deal of growth in my skills as a performer.
Q: Why do you think women should support other women? What have you learned from the women in your life who have supported you?
A: In my experience, the times when I've felt completely my best were those when I'd had a strong group of women surrounding/supporting me. It's really just an incredible feeling when you have other women in your life who are there to build you up. Comparing yourselves to other women, gossiping or bad mouthing other women does NOTHING but tear everyone down. We need to be there supporting one another, especially since we're currently living in a world where we may not get that support anywhere else. Grace attracts grace, and like attracts like.
Thank you to Emily for this awesome interview and please stay tuned for more posts coming in the next few weeks. As we are in a time of uncertainty, it is so important that we take care of ourselves and find peace in the middle of the storm.
With love,
Jess.
