Woman of the Month: Grace Chermak
What's up party people! It is time for our lovely woman of the month blog post for the month of February (Wooohooo!). I have seen this gal in many shows in the last year and have sort of admired her from afar due to her amazing talent and graceful quality she possesses on stage. Last year I had the pleasure of seeing her rock the role of Sarah Brown in the musical Guys and Dolls at The Old Log Theatre here in the Twin Cities and wow! Grace has this ability to just hone into this empathy that radiated from her character. And amazingly enough, this empathy radiates from her personality as well! She is currently in A Little Night Music at Theatre Latté Da playing the role of Anne. I'm actually seeing the show this Sunday and I couldn't be more excited to see her in it!
So now i bring you the lovely Grace Chermak!
Q: What have you found is most important in regards to young female artists supporting one another and Why?
A: I think as young female artists we are craving connection and support. We’re still figuring out how to navigate the business and it can take a toll on our self-esteem at times. I think young women supporting one another in this industry changes everything. Not only does it positively impact the environment that is created in auditions and during productions, but also it moves us forward as a strong unit that defends and looks after one another.
Q: Why do you think it’s important that women learn to support women?
A: Positive female encouragement and camaraderie is so incredibly important. I strongly believe that you can still have confidence in your own abilities while also supporting your fellow female artists. Women are often pitted against one another, but if we do our best to recognize and change that pattern, we can continue to move forward in a positive direction
Q: What has been your favorite show to work on and why?
A: So far in my career, my favorite show has been A Little Night Music with Theater Latté Da. The entire cast and production team brought so much dedication and precision to the creative process and I found it really inspiring. I was lucky enough to perform alongside many well-established actors who have inspired me for years and I couldn’t be more grateful for their friendship and guidance. I also loved the complexity of the Sondheim score and discovering the playfulness and honesty of the character Anne.
Q: What have you found is the most important part when it comes to being a woman in Theater?
A: I think having faith in who you are as a performer is key. It’s very easy to compare yourself to the plethora of talented female performers in our industry, but I agree with Sierra Boggess and her motto that you are enough, you are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are! I work hard to have a positive mentality, to be inspired by the actors around me, and to learn and grow from everything that comes my way.
Thank you to Grace for taking time out of her crazy schedule to do this short interview and remember that you have until this Sunday March 10th to go see A Little Night Music and stay tuned my upcoming posts!
